Are you thinking about buying or selling a property in Seattle? There is nothing you will do that impacts your odds of success more than choosing the right representation. Unfortunately, many people hire a broker just because they are friends of friends or related to a co-worker…only to discover later that the person simply wasn’t qualified. The following is a list of tips that may be helpful in making the right choice.
Make A List Of Your Priorities
You need to make a list of your goals, priorities, budget, choice of neighborhood, etc. Challenge yourself to be as realistic as possible in making your list, so that you don’t set yourself up for disappointment down the road. For example, if you are planning on buying don’t expect to buy a luxury property without a luxury price tag. If you are a seller, don’t mistakenly think that because we have been in a seller’s market that you will be able to demand an unrealistic price or dictate terms. Real estate is a competitive market and the market will usually dictate the price it is willing to pay. Once you have identified your goals, you will be better equipped to find a broker that can help you achieve them.
Do Your Homework
Next, it is critical that you do some due diligence and research the brokers that you are considering using to help you buy or sell. Make sure that they haven’t had any violations on their license and look for positive reviews from their past clients. Explore their website for more details on their experience, education and resume. Be aware that not all brokers may be a good choice or fit for you. For example, many of the “mover & shaker” luxury market brokers in your area may not be interested in representing you or will simply pass you off to a less experienced colleague in their office. I’m sure you would agree that is not likely to be the kind of representation that you are seeking. Many agents who advertise “discounts, discounts, discounts”.. do so, because they simply have no other compelling skills or experience to offer you. Make sure the broker you choose is a good match for the type of property you are interested in buying or selling. For example, if you are looking to become a real estate investor, you should hire a broker that has experience in successfully representing real estate investment properties.
Interview The Best
Once you have assembled a short list of 2-3 potential brokers, contact them and ask to meet for an interview. Any real estate broker that is worth hiring will be pleased to meet you somewhere convenient to discuss your goals and offer solutions for your concerns or challenges. Taking the time to get a feel for each broker’s communication skills and personality will also be helpful in choosing someone who seems to be the best fit for your needs.
